How to play Ludo

Each player has 4 tokens in the base of their color. On your turn, roll the die: only a 6 brings a token out of base onto the starting square. Then move any token by the number you rolled, always clockwise, going once fully around the board.

If you land on a square with a token of another color, it is captured and returned to base. On safe squares (the starting squares and those marked with a star) no one can be captured. After going around, the token enters the home lane of your color toward the center triangle.

The first player to bring all 4 tokens to the center wins. Before starting, set the rules the way you play at home: roll again on a 6 (three 6s in a row lose the turn), need the exact number to reach the center, safe squares and a bonus turn for capturing or reaching home.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ludo the same as Parcheesi or “Don’t get angry”?

They belong to the same family, which descends from the Indian game Pachisi. Parchís in Spain, the German Mensch ärgere dich nicht and the French petits chevaux change details such as safe squares and bonus turns, which is why you can turn these rules on and off here.

Do I need a 6 to leave base?

Yes, only a 6 puts a token into play. If no token can move with the number rolled, the turn passes to the next player.

How does the computer play?

It prioritizes capturing, bringing tokens out of base and reaching the center, and avoids stopping near enemy tokens. On the hard level it also calculates the risk of each square.
