How to play the Game of the Goose

Everyone starts on the starting square. On your turn, roll the dice and move the total along the spiral. Whoever lands on a goose moves again by the same number of squares. On the first move with two dice, 6+3 leads straight to square 26 and 5+4 to square 53.

Special squares change the game: the bridge (6) takes you to 12; the inn (19) makes you lose 1 turn; whoever lands in the well (31) stays stuck until another player falls in; the maze (42) sends you back to 30; the prison (52) holds you for 2 turns; and death (58) sends you back to the start.

The winner is the one who lands exactly on square 63. If the roll goes past it, the token bounces back the squares that were left over. In the rules you choose between two dice or one, and you can turn on the Spanish variant “goose to goose”: the goose takes you straight to the next goose and gives you another roll.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Game of the Goose the same as Juego de la Oca?

Yes. It is the same game, known as Juego de la Oca in Spain, Gioco dell’Oca in Italy and Jeu de l’Oie in France. Each country has small differences, which is why the Spanish variant is an option here.

Why does the board have 63 squares?

The game appeared in Italy in the 16th century, and 63 was seen as a special number (7 × 9). The geese appear every 9 squares, alternating gaps of 4 and 5 squares.

Can the computer cheat?

No. The Game of the Goose is pure luck: everyone rolls the same kind of dice, drawn fairly by the browser, and the special squares work the same for everyone.
