How to play tangram
The tangram has 7 pieces: two large triangles, one medium, two small, a square and a parallelogram. The goal is to cover the whole dark silhouette using all 7 pieces, leaving none out and without one piece lying on top of another.
Drag each piece from the tray onto the figure. To rotate, tap the selected piece again or use the rotate buttons (45 degrees at a time); the “Flip” button turns the piece over, which matters most for the parallelogram. Pieces snap into place on their own when one corner gets close to another.
If you get stuck, ask for a hint: the outline of one piece appears in the right spot for a few seconds. On the keyboard, keys 1 to 7 pick a piece, the arrow keys move it, R rotates and F flips. Each solved figure earns a ✓ and your best time is saved.
Frequently asked questions
Does every tangram figure have a solution?
Yes. All 47 silhouettes here were built with the 7 pieces and checked by computer. Some figures accept more than one solution, and any way that covers the whole silhouette counts.
Where does the tangram come from?
The tangram comes from China and became famous around the world in the 19th century. The fun is that the same 7 pieces, cut from a single square, form thousands of different figures.
Is the tangram good for children?
Very much so: building the figures trains a sense of space, geometric shapes, concentration and patience. Simple shapes, like the square and the house, are great for starting out.
