How to play the semantic word game
Type a word and press “Guess”. The game shows its rank among every word in the vocabulary: #1 is the secret word.
Use the ranks to home in: “Very hot” and “Hot” mean words from the same theme. “Cold” words are far from the topic.
Got it? The word stays in the list with a star. To give up, press “Give up” to see the secret word and start another round.
Frequently asked questions
How does the game measure closeness?
It does not use a language model or the internet. Each word in the vocabulary belongs to one or more themes (animals, food, colours, emotions and so on). Words in the same sub-theme sit closer together; words in the same broad theme are a little further apart. It is an honest approximation, not a true meaning model.
Why was my word rejected?
The vocabulary is hand-picked and has a few hundred words. If a word is not in it, the game says “word not in vocabulary”. It does not know rare words or slang.
Are my wins saved?
The number of wins is kept only in this browser. Nothing is sent to any server.
