How to play Nine Men’s Morris

Each player starts with 9 pieces. First comes the placing phase: on your turn, tap a free point to place a piece. Whenever you line up 3 of your pieces on the same line (a mill), choose one of your opponent’s pieces to remove from the board. Pieces that are already in a mill can only be removed if all the others are in mills too.

After placing all 9 pieces, the moving phase begins: drag a piece (or tap it and then the green point) to a free neighboring point, following the lines. Opening and closing the same mill again and again is the best way to keep removing your opponent’s pieces.

When a player is down to only 3 pieces, they can fly: move any piece to any free point (you can turn this rule off). The player who is left with 2 pieces or no legal move loses. If 50 moves pass in a row without a capture, the game is a draw.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nine Men’s Morris the same as Mill?

Yes. Nine Men’s Morris is also known as Mill, Morris or Merels. It is one of the oldest board games in the world, with boards found carved into structures from the time of the Roman Empire.

What is a good strategy in Nine Men’s Morris?

In the placing phase, take the points with 4 neighbors (the middle points of each side of the central square) and do not rush to close mills. In the moving phase, try to set up a mill that opens and closes in a way your opponent cannot block.

What does flying mean in Nine Men’s Morris?

It is the rule that lets a player with only 3 pieces move any of them to any free point, not just to neighbors. It gives a last chance to the player who is losing. If you prefer the rules without flying, turn off the “Fly with 3 pieces” option.
